Team from Sudan wins Konica Minolta’s International University Contest – with their app to boost university efficiency
On 21st of April Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe announced the winners of its International University Contest in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Held for the second year, the contest provides students from tertiary education institutes with the opportunity to enhance their own daily educational life – by analysing and proposing improvements for document and information workflows at their institutes. This year’s winner is a team of four students from the University of Medical Sciences and Technology of Khartoum (UMST) from Sudan: They convinced the jury with their mobile app that optimises information flows with notifications and streamlines processes, optimising the use of time and resources.
The list of participants at this year’s contest was truly international: Student teams from the International Business School of Sofia (Bulgaria), the University of Groningen (Netherlands), the University of Cape Town (South Africa), the University of Valencia (Spain) and the UMST of Khartoum (Sudan) seized the opportunity to work with Konica Minolta to analyse current document or information workflows within their university and propose innovative solutions for improving those.
All teams identified requirements in key administrative and service processes and made well-defined proposals for solutions to bring clear and important improvements to their institutes. The level of all ideas was very high, which made it exceptionally difficult for us to choose a winner.
The jury further consisted of Alastair Creelman, e-learning specialist at Linnaeus University in Sweden and Armin Alt, Managing Director and co-founder of performIT.
We wanted to create a phone app that would streamline a lot of processes. For example, in the form of alerts sent as notifications – passing on important information that students and staff need to know and to streamline certain processes to eliminate the time and the resources that were being wasted.
At the award ceremony in Amsterdam, the winners were honoured for their success – and they won an invitation to the Web Summit in Lisbon in November, one of the world’s most important tech conferences.
At its International University Contest, Konica brings together academia with professionals from the IT business. Speakers at the event included Dr. Stephanie Keer, senior manager at Konica Minolta USA and part-time lecturer at the NYU in New York City, who provided an assessment of the impact of technology on education, and Andrea Cavallaro, who provided an insight into the way in which KMLE’s Innovation Partnership Network is engaging with Universities in such areas as robotics, artificial intelligence, human computer interaction, and semantic technologies.
